MUSCLE OF THE DAY: Rectus Femoris

The word “Rectus” in latin means “straight”. Along with the vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, & vastus intermedius, these 4-muscles comprise the “quadriceps” group.

Origin: Anterior Inferior Iliac Spine (AIIS)

Insertion: Tibial Tuberosity via patellar ligament

Actions: Hip Flexion & Knee Extension (biarticulate)

Learn why this is a terrible stretch for the hip flexors by understanding anatomy of the rectus femoris & psoas major.
